Horror ratings

Slashers, ghosts, possessions and the things in the dark, from The Shining to Sinners. Horror has the widest gap between what critics write and what audiences actually do on a Friday night, which makes the blended rating more interesting here than anywhere else in the topic.

How these ratings are built

Each film carries its Letterboxd audience average and its Metacritic critic score, standardised within horror, averaged, then ranked inside the genre and curved onto 40-99. Ranking happens within the genre rather than across all films on purpose: horror is graded more harshly by critics than comedy or drama, and rating it on one absolute scale would leave the whole genre sitting in the fifties.

Every rating in this category runs on the same 40 to 99 scale the rest of the game uses. There are 180 entries here across 6 pools. In the game itself these numbers stay hidden until the verdict screen, which is the whole point of the auction; this page is the reference copy, for settling arguments after the fact.

All-time

40 in this pool, from Aliens at 99 down to Poltergeist at 90.

This is the all-time pool. It takes the best of every decade and re-spreads them across the full 40-99 range among themselves, so an all-time draft has the same shape as a decade draft. That is why an entry here carries a different number from the one it has in its own decade table above.
